TechnologyTraceability
From origin to outcome: knowing what happened to every material.
Origin, movement, process, evidence and outcome connected in a single story that serves the next decision.
CENTRAL QUESTIONHow do we know what happened afterwards?
- 01ORIGINWhere and when it appeared.
- 02IDENTITYWhat material it is.
- 03MOVEMENTWho received it and the route.
- 04PROCESSWhat treatment it received.
- 05EVIDENCEDocuments and records.
- 06TRANSFORMATIONWhat it became.
- 07DESTINATIONWhere it ended up.
- 08OUTCOMEWhat value it produced.
01CONTEXT
Traceability is often thought of as paperwork: a manifest that accompanies the waste until it leaves the plant. When the waste leaves, the story is cut off, and basic questions —where did it end up, what did it become, what value did it produce— go unanswered.
02WHY RECORDING IS NOT ENOUGH
Recording for the sake of recording produces files. A manifest fulfills an obligation and leaves evidence of a movement, but it does not explain the material or what happened to it. A record nobody consults before deciding changes no decision.
We do not need any special technology for this. The difficulty is not storing the data, but connecting what already exists around the same material and making it legible when a decision has to be made.
Traceability is not logging. It is context for the next decision.
03OUR HYPOTHESIS
Traceability does not end when waste leaves a plant. If origin, identity, movement, process, evidence, transformation, destination and outcome are connected around the same record, the story is built as it happens and not reconstructed afterwards. That serves operations, compliance and learning.
A complete record brings together origin, classification, composition, weight, documents, route and destination. Not every field exists in every case: each one keeps its level of verification.
04AN EXAMPLE Illustrative example
A lot of material leaves a line with its origin record. At collection, the route and the counterparty are added; in the process, the treatment applied; in transformation, the product it became; and in the outcome, the destination and what was obtained. Whoever consults the record can answer what happened without reconstructing it from emails and spreadsheets.
Illustrative example.
05CURRENT BOUNDARY
Not every stage is captured directly today. Compliance documents can be linked to a material with their validity, but the transport route, the process and the outcome depend on what gets recorded in each operation. Closing the story all the way to the outcome is a direction of work.
06WHAT WE’RE LEARNING
Traceability tends to fail at handoffs: when the material changes hands, place or state, the information gets left behind. Recording the outcome closes the story and is the thing most often left out. And documents are more useful when tied to the lot than when filed in separate folders.
07WHAT COMES NEXT
More stages captured directly, better links to documentation and a closer relationship with Outcome Learning, where the outcome of every story returns to the system.
